You don't have to own a Nook eReader to enjoy the wide range of Nook eBooks offered by Barnes and Noble. You can, for instance, read Nook Books on a Windows PC or a Mac. You can even read Nook Books on some phones. A tablet, however, is perhaps the best device short of a dedicated eReader to use for electronic reading. The Nook software varies for various devices, though all offer highlighting, comments and text searching. For the full-color interactive magazines that Barnes and Noble offers, you must have an iPad or full-sized Android tablet with a touch-sensitive color LCD screen.
Nook App
Barnes and Noble offers a Nook application for the Android operating system version 2.1 and later. An Android tablet owner may visit the Android market place to download and install the free app which has access to the complete Nook library including enhanced content and full color magazines. According to the Android Market's Help site, some users will be unable to install apps, based on their locations or their types of devices. Their hardware matters too. The Nook app works well on the Motorola Xoom, the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the HTC Thunderbolt.
iPad
While Apple offers its own book store, the iPad can also run the Nook eBook application which will display all Nook products. The iPad's responsive touch screen, hi-resolution LCD and efficient processor make it fully compatible with all Nook Books and full-color interactive magazines.
Nook Color
The Barnes and Noble Nook Color originally sold as a Nook eReader with a touch screen and full color capability, making it compatible with all Nook Books and periodicals. A recent modification to its operating system allows users to install tablet apps from the Nook Color's own app store, making it function as a true tablet computer as well as an eReader.
Windows 7 Tablets
While Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC software will run on a Windows 7 Tablet, the Windows version is limited to basic eReading features, and will not display interactive and enhanced content the way the Nook for iPad or Nook for Android or Nook Color will. However, the free Windows application will work with most of the thousands of titles in the Nook Book collection.
