Symantec iAntivirus Screenshots
Symantec iAntivirus Editor's review
iAntiVirus is a free app that will scan for Mac-specific viruses and malicious software, both on your hard-drive and during real-time Web browsing. You access iAntiVirus through a menu bar icon, and the app can scan your Mac for current infections, with either a Quick Scan, a Normal Scan (longer but still relatively quick), or a Custom Scan of specific areas. You can set iAntiVirus to protect your Mac in the background (with a relatively modest resource footprint), and you can also schedule both scans and app updates every week, every day, or every other day, to make sure that you're protecting your computer using the most current virus definitions. Some anti-virus applications will scan for PC-specific threats as well (to make sure you're not passing on malicious software to PC users you interact with), but iAntiVirus is able to maintain a lower profile on your system by focusing on Mac threats only.

You can obtain the most recent virus definitions (alsoknown as protection files or pattern files) from Symantec in severalways. Running LiveUpdate (the first option below)is usually the easiest and most effective, but other options areavailable. Using one method of updating does not preclude theother. On the same computer, you can choose to schedule LiveUpdateautomatic updates, and also manually use LiveUpdate or run IntelligentUpdater whenever you wish to update your virus definitions.
On this page:
LiveUpdate
UITS recommends scheduling LiveUpdate to automaticallyupdate your virus definitions daily. For instructions, see:
Additionally, you can run LiveUpdate any time you want to updateyour virus definitions.
Windows
- In Symantec Endpoint Protection, on the left, click Live Update. The window will close automatically whenthe update is complete.
- In Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, fromthe File menu, select LiveUpdate.... Ifnecessary, choose which way you will connect to the LiveUpdate server byclicking Configure.... If relevant to your version ofSAV/NAV, check the boxes that apply to what you wish to update (e.g.,virus definitions, LiveUpdate). Click Next. When the processis complete, click Finish.

The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that youupdate your virus definitions daily, and scan your computer weekly.
In Mac OS X, from the Applications folder, open SymantecSolutions, and then click LiveUpdate. LiveUpdate willdownload the virus definitions from Symantec's site.
Intelligent Updater on the web
Symantec's Intelligent Updater is an alternative toLiveUpdate for obtaining the most recent virusdefinitions. Intelligent Updater is less convenient to use thanLiveUpdate, because it is a manual process. To download and use Intelligent Updater, go to Symantec's VirusDefinitions & Security Updates page and follow these instructions:
