It does if you mark it as belonging to the application when you put it in there. It doesn't cull data from uninstalled applications

etc/init.d is full of unintelligible clutter as well. It's only unintelligible if you don't know what it's for. Get rid of Classes, or at least organize it, because it seems to contain at least 3 different datasets currently: file extensions, COM classes, and whatever the hell is in CLSID.Add inline documentation so that A) users can tell what things do and B) developers don't forget where to put things and then decide to put things in a new place, adding to the clutter.Flag each key/value with the name of the application that created it, making it easy to clean out crap that doesn't uninstall correctly.Move all system level stuff(driver, security and network config) to a separate hive.Migrate it to an established ACID compliant database format so that it doesn't ever get corrupted. The top level organization structure is pretty much meaningless now.The interesting/user changeable registry keys are scattered. It's still susceptible to corruption due to bad shutdowns, which has caused several of my always-on-except-in-a-power-cut machines to be irreparably damaged. It doesn't cull data from uninstalled applications. It's full of unintelligible clutter(e.g.The registry is such a bad thing because: The fact that the registry is far more hidden from normal users than configuration files usually are also makes it that lots of applications (including those from Microsoft) use completely unpredictable UUID-ridden fucked up namespaces to store things in unobvious places inside the registry.Īs a final point, configuration files, even if they are just a front-end for a GUI program's preference window, have the tendency to be optimized for human readability. That means that a lot more mutations happen to the registry, and a lot more values go into it, than your typical unix configuration file, creating this huge spaghetti tree that a typical registry usually is. I think where the registry does fail, though, is that it is a unified database not only for configuration, but also for state. I see lots of good points here and I do think the registry does get a lot of flack where its risks and problems really do not differ much from systems based around configuration files.
