So I picked up a 750GB WD My Passport at BB a couple days ago, oblivious to the added Drive Lock/Smart BU crap on the label - I was going to format it anyway. After formatting for Mac OS Extended, I mount the drive and an added virtual CD pops up, too. This is the app that allows the user to encrypt/decrypt the drive, and it's apparently part of the firmware. A bit of research shows that lots of folks have had issues with/misunderstood how to use the Drive Lock app, getting locked out of their drives. According to WD, the only solution is to reformat the drive.
Right now, the drive is unlocked and, because I nuked any original content, there doesn't appear to be any way to encrypt it. Can I trust this drive? Anyone have one of these and successfully delete/update the firmware (kind of hoping for an OS X-centric solution)? Should I just return it?

WD Anywhere Backup has a built-in functionality for removing deleted files from a backup destination called Purge Deleted Files.
- When Purge Deleted Files is activated, all files and directories deleted from the source location will also be deleted immediately from the backup location. It is highly recommended that this feature be turned on only temporarily to purge deleted files from the backup destination from time to time or after a system cleanup.
The only other way to remove unwanted files or directories is to delete the existing backup plan and start over.
- To remove the backup plan from WD Anywhere Backup there is a button within the backup plan that removes it.
- Once the backup plan has been removed, you may now delete the WD Anywhere Backup folder from the destionation drive.
- Now you can create a new backup plan for the data you want to backup. If you need help creating a new backup plan, please see Answer ID 20077: How to set up a backup with WD Anywhere Backup on a computer.
